Decadent Apricot Scones

These apricot scones have the most wonderful scent and taste. Outrageously good - warm from the oven - very elegant and delicious!! For me, feeding friends and family fabulous things is one of the "threads" in the weaving of a rich and full life. Bon Appetite!!

Apricot Cream Cheese Scones
3-1/4 c flour
1/2 c. sugar
2-1/2 tsp. baking powder
1/2 tsp. salt
8 oz cream cheese, cold
1/2 c. cold butter
1 c. diced or slivered apricots
1 large egg
2 tsp. vanilla
1/4 c. milk
In a medium sized bowl, wihisk together flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Cut in the cream cheese and butter using pastry blender or fork until the mixture resembles coarse cormeal; then stir in the apricots. In a separate bowl, whisk otgether the egg, vanilla, and milk.
Combine the liquid and dry ingredients and stir until the dough becomes cohevise. DO NOT OVER MIX. Turn the dough out onto a floured board and fold several times until it holds together. Pat dough into a 3/4-inch thick rectangle
Cut scones into triangles. Brush tops lightly with milk and sprinkle with sparkling white sugar. Place scones on parchment paper. Bake in a preheated 425 degree oven for 8 minutes. Turn off oven and leave scones in oven for 8 more minutes until the scones are a light golden brown. Serve hot with clotted cream and jam or raspberry curd. Yields about 18 medium sized scones.

Fabulous Fire

I recently returned from a trip to Toronto with a fellow designer. We attended the IDS09 Interior Design show and thoroughly enjoyed seeing all displays and booths. Ventless fireplaces were a major theme in this years show and a decorative feature that I think creates an outstanding focal point in any room.

The Feeling of Color

I love color!! It evokes such feelings! The high energy of red, the relaxation of blue green (think Caribbean - I do!!), the grounded earthiness of brown, and the calm of white; all reactions to color. Color takes me to different times and places in my life. The beautiful lavender shade of the wisteria at Sunset gardens in CA that I visited with my friend, Patti, the green of the moss on a tree on Martha's Vineyard last summer with my niece Claire, the red earth of the south, are just a few of the multitude of colors that have left their indelible imprint on me. Color makes my heart sing.

This brings me to a fun new offering from Pittsburg Paints called the Hacienda Style. It is a wonderful grouping of vibrant colors that evoke the southwest feel. These are perfectly paired with an excellent book on the Hacienda Style by Karen Witynski-Carr and Joe P Carr.

Leather Floors

I love leather!! I love the “hand” of it, how versatile and durable it is, and how gorgeous it looks on a piece of furniture or used as a floor tile.

Leather floor tiles have been around for many thousands of years. Today many of these products are made from recycled leather and that the green characteristics fit into my sustainability goals.

Beautiful!!!

Paper Lanterns

Paper Lanterns have a magical feel, I think. Floating in the air or on water, giving off their soft diffused light, creating a mysterious and enchanting mood. Paper lanterns are a wonderful accessory. Available in countless sizes, shapes, and colors, with our without illumination, lanterns can be a beautiful accent to many a room or event.

Last fall we had a birthday celebration in our back yard and I selected orange, green, and yellow paper lanterns for the party decorations. The lanterns were suspended at various heights from the trees and I utilized the larger battery operated lanterns on posts to illuminate the path to our bonfire in the "way back." It was BEAUTIFUL and very FUN!!

Hope you are inspired and enjoy the magic...

Stratus Wines - Environmentally Sustainable Winery

Niagara On The Lake and it's surrounding area is a wonderful place to visit. We especially enjoy the wine tasting, the golf, the B&B's, shopping, and the Shaw Festival. There are some excellent wineries and one in particular is of interest on the Sustainable front. Stratus winery was the first building in Canada to receive LEED gold certification and the only winery worldwide to fully acheive this designation. And, it's a beautiful building, inside and out with delicious wines.

President Barack Obama enjoyed a 2002 Stratus Red at a luncheon last week while making his first offical visit to Canada. How perfectly appropriate!

Linoleum Today

I am huge fan of linoleum and I have specified it many times over the years. I recently saw the latest offering from FORBO and love the new pattern, Striato. I love linoleum it for it's durability, it's great colors, the ability to design endless patterns, and its sustainability due to being made from readily renewable materials. Fantastic product for both Commercial and Residential applications.

Favorite Lighting

I consider myself very fortunate to be a designer. We get to “play” with all of the fun stuff! What a treat it is to see all of the beautiful things that are out there in the world. I can see an object and weave an entire space around that one object – in my imagination, and all within a few seconds. FUN!

I recently discovered Jamie Young Lighting and Accessories. Great designs and use of materials. LOVE their shades!!! A small sampling of the 2009 Collection…let me know what you think.
